WHAT IS CAMP MARIPOSA?

Camp Mariposa is designed for children grades 3-6, with the overall goal of developing participants’ understanding of drug and alcohol issues, to raise their awareness of resources available to help them, and to reduce their sense of isolation. Camp Mariposa will aim to help children understand and cope with an addicted or co-dependant family member.  It will be a traditional, fun, multi-day camp that will provide counseling and emotional support, as well as teach children a variety of problem solving and self-care strategies, and help to build a positive self-esteem.  Carefully designed games, activities and recreation will give children a chance to laugh, play, explore and learn, as well as to create friendships with other children that relate to them.

HISTORY

The idea of Camp Mariposa was developed by The Moyer Foundation’s co-founder, Karen Moyer and Claudia Black- a member of the Foundation’s Advisory Committee and nationally recognized expert in addiction.

“One of The Moyer Foundation’s highest priorities is to continually evaluate gaps in services for children who are in severe distress and collaborate with organizations that can meet these children’s needs. Through the addiction expertise and guidance of Claudia Black, we were able to partner with YES to help provide such a service. Camp Mariposa will provide much needed support to children who are dealing with the complex issues of an addicted family member. Personally, I am thrilled to have such a program in our community and hope it can help many children dealing with addiction. Camp Mariposa will give them hope for the opportunity to break the cycle and cope with their difficult situation.” – Karen Moyer
