2.17: Broadly, we estimate that we have 550,000 children in our catchment area (the Central Plateau and Lower Artibonite). Our pediatric program in Cange currently has a 35-bed pediatric ward, as well as an outpatient pediatric clinic that serves 50-80 children per day.  More specifically, at mobile clinics in Port-au-Prince’s temporary settlements, 4194 patients were seen from February 7-14.  Almost 15% were children between the ages of 0-5.  We estimate that the total catchment area of the temporary settlements that we are serving with these mobile clinics is around 100,000 people.  Additionally, prior to the earthquake, PIH was supporting roughly 10,000 OVC and we know this will dramatically increase in the wake of the earthquake.

Beyond mobile clinics in Port-au-Prince we continue to help children in the ways we always do, through battling childhood malnutrition, providing for school fees and daily hot lunch, making sure they have access to clean water, and comprehensive medical care across the Central Plateau and Artibonite of Haiti. - Free the Children and Partners in Health

Dr. Koji Nakashima provides this  update:   3000 patients have been seen across the four existing PIH sites that received the highest number of earthquake related injuries. (These figures do not include the several thousands of patients treated at the University Hospital in Port au Prince.)  He added that one third of those 3000 patients will need ongoing care and that PIH staff and volunteers have performed 500 surgeries with 200 people still hospitalized for inpatient care.  Koji conjectured that the number of people needing baseline services at PIH facilities has likely risen twenty percent since the earthquake. He closed by highlighting that in addition to the immediate care needs and the increased primary care needs, PIH will need to continue to up our ability to treat an array of ongoing conditions associated with earthquake-related injuries, including physical and occupational therapy, follow-up surgeries, and importantly, prosthetics fitting and monitoring, which he describes as “a lifetime commitment.”

To date, 84 planes have carried more than 336 people and close to 100 tons of cargo to reinforce our existing operations in Haiti. We are deeply grateful for all of our partners who have advised and assisted us over the past month.

1.29:
"THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE MOYER FOUNDATION SUPPORTERS – With your help we have been able to help in so many ways: Eight planes full of volunteers and supplies have landed in Haiti over the last week, bringing the total to 48 since the day after the earthquake. 170 medical and logistical personnel have been sent to address the immediate needs of earthquake victims, along with over 150,000 pounds of supplies and equipment. As a result of these efforts, we have 24 staffed, functional operating rooms. In addition, our 27,000 sq. foot staging area in Miami is now operational—22 pallets of supplies are being shipped to Haiti via the Dominican Republic today, and another 40 will go this week.  THANK YOU! – Free the Children
