Dr. Koji Nakashima provides this update: 3000 patients have been seen across the four existing PIH sites that received the highest number of earthquake related injuries. (These figures do not include the several thousands of patients treated at the University Hospital in Port au Prince.) He added that one third of those 3000 patients will need ongoing care and that PIH staff and volunteers have performed 500 surgeries with 200 people still hospitalized for inpatient care. Koji conjectured that the number of people needing baseline services at PIH facilities has likely risen twenty percent since the earthquake. He closed by highlighting that in addition to the immediate care needs and the increased primary care needs, PIH will need to continue to up our ability to treat an array of ongoing conditions associated with earthquake-related injuries, including physical and occupational therapy, follow-up surgeries, and importantly, prosthetics fitting and monitoring, which he describes as “a lifetime commitment.”
To date, 84 planes have carried more than 336 people and close to 100 tons of cargo to reinforce our existing operations in Haiti. We are deeply grateful for all of our partners who have advised and assisted us over the past month.
